The Sweet Spot Between Flavor and Feel

My Father “Blue” and a Night Worth Savoring

There’s a fine line in the cigar world—one I’ve walked for years.

I’ve always leaned toward mellow to medium-bodied cigars. Not by accident, but by experience. Full-strength smokes, while often rich and complex, tend to leave me a bit… off balance. A little too much head, not enough enjoyment. And that’s not what this ritual is about.

But here’s the tradeoff: milder cigars don’t always deliver the depth of flavor or the satisfying smoke that makes you slow down and appreciate the moment.

At my trusted tobacconist inside High Times Wine & Liquor, I asked for something specific—full flavor without the full punch. Something refined, balanced, and worthy of a proper evening. He didn’t hesitate. “Try this,” he said, handing me a My Father Blue by My Father Cigars.

That was all I needed.

The Setting

That evening wasn’t just about the cigar—it was about connection.

A FaceTime cigar night with my sons-in-law, Steve Hart and Ryan McConnaughey. It's a time to catch up and add lot's of laughs and the kind of easy camaraderie that makes a night feel complete. I'm 67 years old but when my son's and I get together, we turn into teenagers - it's so fun.

In my glass: an Eagle Rare 10 Year Old Bourbon —smooth, balanced, and strong enough to stand beside the cigar without overpowering it.

The Cigar

The My Father Blue delivered exactly what I was hoping for—and maybe a little more.

From the first draw, it offered a rich, flavorful profile without the aggressive edge you sometimes get from fuller cigars. A touch of sweetness, and just enough spice to keep things interesting—but never overwhelming.

It was quick to light and the smoke was thick and satisfying, the burn consistent, and the construction flawless. Most importantly—it stayed with me just right. No head rush. No imbalance. Just a smooth, enjoyable experience from start to finish.

Oregon Man Rating

Flavor: 9/10 Smoothness: 9/10 Burn & Construction: 9/10 Strength Balance: 10/10 Pairing Potential: 9/10

Overall: 9.2 / 10

Final Draw

This is the kind of cigar that reminds you why you keep searching.

  • Balanced. Flavorful. Easy to enjoy.

  • Paired with a proper cocktail and even better company, it turned into one of those evenings you don’t rush—and don’t forget - The Oregon Man Way!

The Oregon Man takeaway: I found out you don’t need strength to make a statement—just the right balance of tobacco, and the right people to share it with.
