A Bucket List Cigar

Some cigars are memorable because of how they smoke. Others are memorable because of the story behind them.

For me, the Davidoff - "The Late Hour Churchill" falls squarely into the second category.

My introduction to Davidoff wasn't through a cigar shop or a magazine review. It came through following two gentlemen who embody everything the Davidoff brand represents: elegance, sophistication, and a deep appreciation for cigar culture—Edward Sahakian and his son, Edward Sahakian Jr., owners of the legendary Davidoff of London.

Over the years, I became a devoted follower of their YouTube content, captivated by their knowledge, style, and passion for premium cigars. Their videos introduced me not only to the Davidoff brand but also to the rich history and traditions surrounding it. Visiting Davidoff of London became a bucket-list destination.

In 2024, Julie and I traveled to London, and I finally had the opportunity to visit the famous store. What happened next was completely unexpected. As I was admiring the humidor, Edward Sahakian Sr. himself walked over, introduced himself, and spent several minutes chatting with me. We talked about my journey to the store, my appreciation for Davidoff, and how I had followed their content for years. It was one of those rare moments when reality exceeds expectations.

So when I lit up a Davidoff Winston Churchill The Late Hour Churchill on my patio, I wasn't simply smoking a premium cigar—I was revisiting a special memory.

About the Cigar

The Late Hour series represents a bolder, richer departure from Davidoff's traditionally milder profile. The blend is highlighted by tobacco aged in Scotch single malt whisky casks, creating a distinctive character that appeals to experienced cigar smokers seeking complexity and depth.

At approximately $25-$28 per cigar, this is firmly in the premium category, but Davidoff's reputation for consistency and craftsmanship helps justify the investment.

The Experience

Aroma & Room Note

The aroma was sweet, rich, and absolutely inviting. The room note carried a refined character that lingered pleasantly in the evening air, making this a cigar that even non-smokers might find enjoyable from a distance.

Flavor Profile

The first flavor to hit my palate was rich cocoa, followed by notes of cedar and dried fruit. As the cigar progressed, earthy undertones, leather, and subtle pepper emerged, creating a complex yet balanced smoking experience. The whisky-cask influence isn't overpowering. Instead, it quietly enhances the blend, adding another layer of sophistication rather than dominating the profile.

Construction & Burn

As expected from Davidoff, the construction was exceptional. The cigar felt perfectly rolled, with a firm yet comfortable draw.

The burn remained largely consistent throughout the experience. My only criticism was that the cigar required more frequent attention than I expected. If I let it rest for more than a minute or two, it had a tendency to go out, requiring a relight. While not a major issue, it was surprising given Davidoff's usual near-flawless performance.

Oregon Man Findings

Aroma & Room Note: Sweet, rich, and delicious.

Flavor Profile: Cocoa leads the way, followed by cedar, dried fruit, earth, leather, and subtle pepper.

Construction: Excellent construction and burn consistency, with a good—but not exceptional—draw. Required occasional relights.

Versatility: Perfect after dinner or during a slow evening on the patio.

Best Drink Pairing: Boulevardier. The cocktail's balance of bourbon, Campari, and sweet vermouth beautifully complemented the cigar's cocoa and dried fruit notes. I'd also recommend Oban Single Malt or Johnney Walker 15 year old.

Best Music Pairing: Andrea Motis. Her smooth vocals and elegant jazz styling provide the perfect soundtrack for The Late Hour's refined character.

Final Thoughts

The Davidoff Winston Churchill The Late Hour Churchill is a cigar that rewards experience, patience, and reflection. Rich, complex, and unmistakably sophisticated, it showcases Davidoff's ability to create a full-bodied cigar without sacrificing balance or elegance.

Would I buy it again? Absolutely, probably today!

Not only because it delivers an outstanding smoking experience, but because every time I light one, I'm reminded of a bucket-list trip to London, a memorable conversation with Edward Sahakian Sr., and the realization that sometimes our cigar heroes are every bit as gracious in person as they appear to be on screen.

Oregon Man Rating: 9.0/10

A refined, full-bodied masterpiece best enjoyed when the day is done and there's nowhere else you need to be.
