In this post, you will discover how to craft a Walnut Old Fashioned, learn about the ingredients that make it special, and find tips to impress your guests with this sophisticated drink. Whether you are a seasoned mixologist or a home bartender looking to try something new, this recipe will elevate your cocktail game.

The Oregon Man’s Note:                                                              This Walnut Old Fashioned leans into the deeper, richer side of the classic. The Demerara Syrup is a richer and more flavorful alternative to a sugar cube or standard simple syrup. The Walnut bitters add a warm, nutty backbone that blends naturally with a good bourbon, creating a drink that’s smooth and simple, the perfect way to end your evening.

Essence: Walnut Bitters Introduce A Deep, Toasty Richness With A Woodland Character From The Bourbon.

Ingredients:

 1 Bar spoon Demerara Syrup

 2-3 Dashes Walnut Bitters

2 oz Bourbon (Go with a higher proof like Old Forester 1910)

1 -2 Large Clear Ice Cube

Glassware: Chilled Rocks Glass

Garnish: Wide Orange Peel and/or Cocktail Cherry

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients in your Rocks glass. Add ice and stir gently for about 20-30 seconds, or until well-chilled.

Music Pairing: Wallflowers - 1 Headlight

Tips for Perfecting Your Walnut Old Fashioned

  • Use quality whiskey: The base spirit matters. Choose a 100-proof bourbon or rye with rich caramel and vanilla notes to complement the walnut.

  • Control sweetness: Adjust the sweetener (in this case Demerara Syrup to your taste. Walnut flavors can be slightly bitter, so balance is key.

  • Experiment with bitters: Try different bitters like Aztec chocolate, to add complexity.

  • Serve with large ice cubes: They melt slower, keeping your drink cold without watering it down.

  • Try different garnishes: Try a dehydrated orange round then sprinkle it lightly with sugar.

Pairing the Walnut Old Fashioned with Food

This cocktail’s nutty and slightly sweet profile pairs well with a variety of foods:

  • Cheese boards featuring aged cheddar, gouda, or blue cheese

  • Charcuterie with cured meats like prosciutto or salami

  • Roasted nuts or spiced almonds

  • Dark chocolate desserts or walnut brownies
