The Good Life, The Oregon Man Way

There’s a certain pull to a well-lived life. Not flashy. Not loud. Just… dialed in.

It’s not about chasing luxury for the sake of it. It’s about knowing what you like, taking your time, and appreciating the details most people rush past. It’s your favorite chair, the right drink and music that makes you feel something good.

That’s the lane we’re in here.

Picture a low-lit room your patio or even your campsite. A glass in hand, a cigar resting nearby, and a little jazz rolling in the background—maybe some Dave Brubeck and hopefully sharing this time with your family and friends.

That’s good living, as I see it.

The Simple Trio: Cigars, Spirits, and Jazz

If there’s a foundation to this whole thing, it’s pretty simple: cigars, a good pour, and the right music. Not because it’s fancy—but because it slows you down.

A cigar isn’t something you rush. You pick it out, cut it clean, take your time lighting it. The first draw tells you what kind of evening it’s going to be. Good ones open up slowly—earth, a little spice, maybe something sweet if you’re paying attention.

Same goes for the drink. Maybe Scotch, or your favorite bourbon. Doesn’t matter as long as it fits the moment.

And the music—that’s where jazz earns its keep. The music knows how to hold back and not overpower the moment,

Style That Doesn’t Try Too Hard

Here’s where a lot of people get it wrong.

Style isn’t always about being noticed. As my daughter Sarah (the stylist in the family) would say, “It’s about being put together without needing to explain it”.

Like a jacket that fits right. Shoes that have seen a few good nights but are still taken care of and maybe just the right hat to fit your mood or situation.

The same idea applies at home.

You don’t need much. Just the right things:

  • A comfortable chair

  • A spot for a proper pour

  • The right glassware that makes your cocktail look inviting

  • Music you can drop the needle on

That’s enough. More than enough, actually.

The Power of a Small Ritual

Now that I’m retired and the older I get, the more I appreciate the little routines.

Lighting a cigar the right way. Pouring a drink without rushing it. Letting a record play all the way through instead of skipping tracks.

These aren’t big moments—but they add up.

They slow things down. That’s the Oregon Man way, that’s good living.

An Open Invitation

If this way of living speaks to you, you don’t need to overhaul anything.

Start small.

Handmade cigar. Better drink. Better music and a little more time to enjoy all three.

That’s it.

The rest tends to take care of itself.

Cheers.
